When we act with that same humility, we are able to make room for Christ to live within us. Mary’s humility challenges us to let go of our fears, our desires to understand everything, and the need to be in control. Her humility allowed her to believe that the Lord was indeed with her and to say yes with conviction. She recognized that her Creator knew more than her fears or anxieties and she put her trust in God. She was willing to let God direct her and act within her humanity. Rather, she humbled herself and declared herself the servant of the Lord. She did not let her fears and anxieties drive her response to this invitation. While we can relate to her humanity, Mary’s gritty humility challenges us. We often don’t understand God’s purpose for our lives and ask with her, “How can this be?” It should comfort us that even though she was prepared by God for this task, Mary still needed to be told to be not afraid and reassured that the Lord was with her. Her humanity is essential for Christ’s story, and our own humanity is no less important. She knew the same worries we find in ourselves: feeling overwhelmed with the demands of life doubting if we’re capable of what is asked of us disbelief that we are worthy or the right person for the job.Īnd here, in Mary’s honesty, we find comfort.
In her humanity, we can see Mary’s fear and perplexity in this encounter with the divine. Tanner’s depiction of Mary gives us something to ponder: we can see ourselves in her humanity, which allows us to be inspired by her humility.
